LITTLE KNIGHTS LEARNING CENTER
LA PORTE CITY CAMPUS
THE CENTER
As with any new, exciting project, we've been asked a lot of questions. If you don't see the answer to your question below, please reach out to us at lklclpc@gmail.com!
Frequently Asked Questions
Where will it be located?
Little Knights Learning Center - La Porte City Campus will open initially in La Porte City Elementary School, starting in Mid-January, 2025. Watch for updates here on the website and on Facebook!
In 2026/2027 we plan to build and move to a stand alone building. The Union Community School District has deeded land to the Little Knights Learning Center - LPC Campus for a site adjacent to La Porte City Elementary. This location is PERFECT for LKLC-LPC as we know our families have children in both daycare and in school, so you are only stopping once. It’s also great for children and families who will utilize our before and after school programs. We are grateful to UCSD for working with us and seeing the need and benefit of our child care center!
How big will the center be?
In the school, we will occupy four classrooms and an office space. Initial capacity will be approximately 50 children.
As a building, the center is being designed to meet the current and expected needs of our community. At this time the center will accommodate approximately 100 children, and will be constructed to meet or exceed all building space regulations.
When will it open?
We're in the final prep to in the school in mid-January, 2025!
We continue to raise funds to open our own building in 2026/27. We appreciate your help in achieving our goal - reach out to get involved or see our Donate page to learn about making a donation.
Was this project attempted in the past? Why now?
Original efforts for the project started in 2017 in parallel with Dysart's initiative. While the La Porte City initiative did not gain traction due to meeds being met via in-home child care, Dysart opened their center in the elementary school in 2018, and then opened their own facility in 2021.
The La Porte City effort was resurrected in 2023 due to a critical child care shortage in the community.
Is this needed?
Yes! Over the past 10 years, it's estimated that more than 80 child care spaces in our community have been lost due to the closure of in-home providers, with two more expected to close in the next year.
CHILD CARE
What ages will be accepted?
In the elementary school, Little Knights Learning Center will provide care for 2-5 years olds, as well as wrap around care for elementary school-age children.
In the constructed center, children ages 6 weeks through elementary school age will have a welcoming, caring home away from home.
